The operators that will not publish a monthly rate
Three of the county's leisure operators gate the number behind a join now form. We are not going to invent it for them.
- Freedom Leisure, Great Yarmouth borough: Marina Centre and Phoenix Leisure Centre monthly rates not published.
- Parkwood Leisure, Breckland: Dereham, Thetford, Swaffham and Attleborough monthly rates not published.
- Alive West Norfolk: class prices published, monthly membership rates not.
When you ring, get four numbers before you give them a bank detail: the monthly rate, the joining fee, the minimum term and the notice period. The joining fee is where the cheap headline usually goes.

Norfolk sits low against those figures at the budget end and about level in the middle. What it does not have is depth of choice outside the cities, which is why a £36 all-centres membership in South Norfolk is a better deal than it looks.

Paying nothing
Before you sign anything, the county has 23 free adult 5k parkruns every Saturday, from Hunstanton Promenade and Sandringham in the west to Gorleston Cliffs and Great Yarmouth North Beach in the east, plus junior 2k events at Eaton Park and Gorleston. There are free outdoor gyms too, including North Walsham Memorial Park and Gold Park at Aylsham.

Why do you not list Freedom Leisure or Parkwood prices?
Because they do not publish them. Both gate the monthly rate behind a join now flow, and a guessed price is worse than no price. Ring them and ask for the rate, the joining fee, the minimum term and the notice period.
Are there concessions for over 65s?
South Norfolk publishes an Active Seniors rate of £30.40 a month against a £36 standard, and a general concession at £28.20. Alive West Norfolk publishes a £5.20 concession class rate against £10.40 full price.
Is there a joining fee?
South Norfolk charges £15. Others vary and several do not publish it. Always ask, because it is the figure most often left out of an advertised monthly price.
