Where to start

Norfolk is three gym markets, not one

Norfolk holds 940,400 people across 5,384 square kilometres. Fifth largest English county by area, 25th by population, and the only sizeable English county with no motorway at all. County-wide gym advice is therefore useless. Work out which of the three markets you live in first.

  • Norwich and the commuter ring. Three Gym Group sites and three PureGyms inside the city, budget membership from £15.99 a month, and enough choice to change your mind in a fortnight. Wymondham and Aylsham sit inside that pull.
  • The market towns. One council leisure centre, two or three good independents, and a 20 minute drive to anything else. Dereham, Thetford, Attleborough, Diss and Watton all run to that pattern.
  • The coast and the deep rural north and west. North Norfolk has the longest average journeys to key services of any district in the county: 57 minutes 36 seconds by car, 34 minutes 6 seconds walking or on public transport. In King's Lynn and West Norfolk, two community-accessible sports halls serve 154,300 residents, and the 28,316 people in the Hunstanton area have none at all.

Norfolk

Who runs your council leisure centre

Seven districts, seven answers, and the answer changes your price, your app and whether a membership works at the next town along. This is the thing scraped listings get wrong.

  • King's Lynn and West Norfolk: Alive West Norfolk, the borough council's own arm. Alive Lynnsport, St James Pool, Alive Downham, The Oasis at Hunstanton.
  • North Norfolk: Everyone Active, on all six council sites. The Reef at Sheringham, Victory Swim and Fitness and North Walsham Sports Centre at North Walsham, Fakenham Sports and Fitness, Cromer Sports Centre and Stalham Sports Centre.
  • Norwich: Places Leisure runs Riverside on Wherry Road. The Norman Centre at Mile Cross is run by Norwich City Council itself.
  • Great Yarmouth: Freedom Leisure, on a ten year contract from 2022. The £26m Marina Centre and Phoenix Leisure Centre at Gorleston.
  • Breckland: Parkwood Leisure, at Dereham, Thetford, Swaffham and Attleborough. Watton's centre is independent of that contract.
  • South Norfolk: the council runs its five sites in house, at Wymondham, Kett's Park, Long Stratton, Diss and Framingham Earl.
  • Broadland: we could not confirm a district-run leisure centre. If you live in Aylsham or Reepham, your options are community and private.

Active Norfolk is the county's Active Partnership, not an operator. It commissions programmes and holds the data. It runs no gyms. The full operator breakdown is here.

Norfolk

Start with the shortlist

Most people arrive knowing one thing about what they want. Start from that.

Norfolk

Why the county needs the gyms it has

66.5% of Norfolk adults are overweight or obese, against 64.5% across England. 67.8% meet the recommended weekly activity level, so roughly three in ten adults do not. A quarter of residents are 65 or over, against 18.7% nationally, and in North Norfolk it is 34.2%. Around 135,000 people, near enough 15% of the county, live in the 20% most deprived areas of England.

There are also 23 free adult 5k parkruns, from Hunstanton Promenade to Gorleston Cliffs. If the membership question is stalling you, start with one of those on Saturday and decide afterwards.
